Beyond the Bridge Collection

These transferware plates features a portion of a lithographic print by Currier and Ives dated 1879 showing a “balloon view” of Brooklyn with its south and west waterfront in the foreground. The four details from the map illustrate the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Heights, Governor’s Island, and the Navy Yard with Wallabout Bay in the foreground.

Each of our Brooklyn Plates features a scene based in a Currier and Ives balloon view map of Brooklyn from the 1800’s. The prototype design, first created in 2009 for Think Fabricate’s exhibit at Bklyn Designs, is in the permanent decorative arts collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
