PS 102K — NYC School Construction Authority

Brooklyn, NY

A new playground was designed for PS102K as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative along with significant parapet, brick, and terracotta facade renovations throughout the building. The restoration of the brick and terracotta facade of PS102K involved the removal and replacement of the parapet at the original portion of the building, restoration of the terracotta throughout including the 1929 addition, as well as a playground designed as part of the Mayors PlaNYC initiative. The original building is unusual in that the exterior walls are bearing walls, and the detailing of the parapet proceeded accordingly. The new playground is designed to provide passive recreation alongside existing more active recreation areas, and is designed literally to snake through the proposed trees and past the existing areas. The circular plan forms originated with some of the observed games that the children at the school often play involving circles.
